Ummagumma

Ummagumma was a two disc album featuring a live album and an experimental studio piece. The live album tends to disappoint, the recording is not as clear as it could be especially on the vocals. It does give a glimpse into the experience of seeing Pink Floyd live, but I think you lose quite a bit when you don't get the lighting effects and the ambience of the show. The four chosen songs are all slow pieces and the first album lacks some fundamental jolt.

Disk One:

Astronomy Domine:

Interesting to hear Roger Waters do the vocals live. From the rhythmic radio static intro you are swept into this cosmic space ballad. Then the continuing high and low build ups just elevate you drifting through the atmosphere. Then it bookends into radio static.

Careful with that Axe Eugene:

A nice prelude to the screaming vocals that come at you about three minutes into the song.

Set the Controls for the heart of the sun:

Set the controls to go into the core of the psyche and once they are set you have no choice but to be pulled kicking and screaming even into the inner levels and realities of the self. Its a journey that can only end in destruction as a trip into the sun.

A saucerful of secrets:

This is the masterpiece of the album. It opens with a chaos of sound effects and experimentation. Its very brave and hard to pull this off but it is essential to build up the sense of being lost and confused. Then it fades to quiet and hammering drums come in structuring the entropy of sound into a steady beating rhythm with spirals of freeform sounds. This then falls with the sound of collapsing walls and ruble to a very spooky organ solo playing to the back drop of a storm. Then the melody shifts to an angelic sound. This esoteric force of music that then couples itself with voices takes the piece to a beautiful climax

Disc two:

Sysyphus:

The barbarian dark theme is prevalent in this piece. With the pounding drums and overtones. Yet it has mixed in some very light fluttering moments and some clean piano sounds.

Granchester meadows:

Naturalistic ballad features a cool overlay of nature sound effects with a light guitar melody and soft vocals.

Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathering Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict:

I used to stump my friends who claimed to be Floyd fans with this title, about 90% has never heard of it. The song sounds exactly as it claims. This song has always been a bit silly to me.

The Narrow Way:

One of my favorite songs, The guitar notes are so fresh and the background singers so expressive. It has deep furrows into darkness that make me think of lava and caverns. And the third part is lyrically one of the best the band has ever done.

The Grand Vizier's Garden Party:

Extended drum solos
