Obscured by Clouds

Obscured by clouds was another soundtrack for Pink Floyd. To me this is the best soundtrack of them all. One the movie itself really seemed to be well suited for the Pink Floyd sound. The movie was the French film La Vallee. The main character is Viviane who is the wife of the French consol in Melbourne. She joins a group of explorers to look for a hidden valley in the outback where a rare bird lives. Along the journey they encounter isolated natives. The influence of the natives inspire the explorers to explore their humanity while in nature and free from the oppressive force of society. The movie is a perfect analogy to the exploratory Pink Floyd sound. This is an album that even heard standing alone carries these epic themes across. David Gilmore seems to be the main influence in this album both in leadership and musically with his guitar work in place through the whole album. This was also the first Pink Floyd album to feature the VCS 3 synthesizer. This album is one of the first Floyd albums to have a consistent theme across the entire project, the theme of appreciating life and all its aspects both negative and positive.

Obscured by clouds:

This song begins with the first of the great Pink Floyd synthesizer intros. It fazes in with an awesome guitar solo overtopping it. The song is entirely instrumental with the guitar and drums.

When you're in:

Another instrumental song with very clashing riffs and a much more pronounced drum beat that swaps control back and forth with the guitar.

Burning Bridges:

This song has a very ethereal sound to it. The lyrics are in a real time delivery while the music its self seems to be about half of the speed. The effect is very dreamlike with pitches slowly bending in and out. The vocals also draw out at the end of most of the lines.

The gold it's in the…:

This is a very pop styled rock song. It follows a standard rock song format. The hard guitar solos are quite nice though.

Wot's Uh the Deal:

Easily my favorite song on the album. It has it all touching poetic lyrics, beautiful guitar work. A very polished and full song

Mudmen:

Kind of a sleepy song. The intro is very slow and drawn out, with some scattered keyboard work. The drums really kick the song into the main body of music. Has probably the best guitar solo of the album.

Childhood's End:

There is an Arthur C Clarke Novel by the same name. It is speculated that the novel may have influenced the lyrics.

Free Four:

I catchy sounding song with an upbeat tempo and clapping. Although the subject matter is quite depressing.

Stay:

Cool synthesizer effects and haunting lyrics.

Absolutely Curtains:

To me this song has the most Floyd feel about it. Many layers of sound elements form cosmic explosions.
